Breaking DOMA News of the Day: In a victory for gay marriage advocates that rivals the enormity of Proposition 8 in California, the First Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Boston today upheld a lower court’s ruling and declared the federal Defense of Marriage Act unconsitutional.
From the court’s opinion:

“[M]any Americans believe that marriage is the union of a man and a woman, and most Americans live in states where that is the law today. One virtue of federalism is that it permits this diversity of governance based on local choice, but this applies as well to the states that have chosen to legalize same-sex marriage. Under current Supreme Court authority, Congress’ denial of federal benefits to same-sex couples lawfully married in Massachusetts has not been adequately supported by any permissible federal interest.”

Expect the ruling to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

My partner Kenn and I have been in a committed relationship for almost 35 years. During that time, we have lost many friends to AIDS, while sitting presidents and legislators turned a blind eye to our fight for equality.

President Obama is to be commended for making a stand to end inequality in America. One day—hopefully soon—we hope to enjoy the benefits heterosexual married couples enjoy. Now is the time for all good men and women to support the President’s wise decision. I donated today and will continue to support the President and others who are fighting for fairness for all. What a guy! I am filled with hope and joy. Thank you, Mr. President.

The big difference between Bill Maher and Donald Trump, though, is that the president is not sharing a stage with Bill Maher.

MSNBC’s Chuck Todd responding to a Romney Spokesperson arguing that Obama has not renounced stuff that Bill Maher has said.

This is the biggest key of the whole Trump argument. I don’t expect you to stand behind or refute every single person who happens to be a supporter. But if you’re hosting a contest where the entry fee is a campaign donation to win a dinner with a celebrity, you should try and find someone who isn’t a noted racist.

Obama: U.S. wronged Vietnam vets
With the names of the dead etched in stone behind him, President Barack Obama on Monday marked the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War by calling the treatment of the conflict’s veterans a “national shame, a disgrace” and pledging that future soldiers will return home to better treatment.
The war was “one of the most painful chapters for our history,” Obama said in a speech delivered to a crowd of vets and military families in front of the Vietnam War Memorial’s “Wall of Names” on the National Mall.
”You were often blamed for a war you didn’t start, when you should have been commended for serving your country with valor. You were sometimes blamed for misdeeds of a few, when the honorable service of the many should have been praised. You came home and sometimes were denigrated, when you should have been celebrated,” Obama said. “It was a national shame, a disgrace that should have never happened. And that’s why here today we resolve that it will not happen again. And so a central part of this 50th anniversary will be to tell your story as it should have been told all along.”
Nearly 60,000 U.S. soldiers lost their lives in an unsuccessful bid to stem the spread of communism in the Southeast Asian country, and the fierce domestic dispute over the conflict remains a political fault line dividing the Baby Boomer generation.

It is reported that about 30% of the world’s population is unemployed. That’s worse than the Great Depression, but it’s now an international phenomenon. You have 30% of the world unemployed, a huge amount of work that needs to be done just rebuilding the society alone. The people who are unemployed want to do the work, but the system is such a catastrophic failure that it cannot bring together idle hands and work. This is all hailed as a great success, and it is a great success - for a very small sector of the population.
» The first Latino president of the United States already has been born.

political-linguaphile:

Henry Cisneros, the former San Antonio mayor who was secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Clinton administration, made the suggestion three years ago in an interview with the Spanish-language news service EFE.

“I don’t know if he or she’s in elementary school or in law school or is already elected … to public office, but I believe that that person is already alive, and we’re 20 years or less away from having a Latino or Latina president,” said Cisneros, whose own path to higher office may have been derailed by personal scandal and who today is executive chairman of CityView, an urban development investment firm.

When the day comes that Cisneros predicted, the man or woman behind the resolute desk in the Oval Office will represent an ever-increasing segment of the population. Latinos (or Hispanics, the official government term) made up 15.5% of the U.S. population in 2010, but by 2050 they’re projected to approach 25% of the population.

In case you were wondering why ethnic programs are getting canceled. In case you were wondering why the right is so desperate to eliminate immigration. In case you we’re wondering why the Spanish language is seen as “evil”. In case you were wondering why the Dream Act hasn’t passed. The right is scared of that 25%. Too bad those over 50 million latin@s currently living in the Unites States are virtually unstoppable now. I can’t wait to see the first Latino president.

Pigs in riot police gear face off with disenfranchised industrial workers — a goose, a chameleon, and hundreds of other small animals who combine forces to create a Godzilla-like monster.”

We let Willow cut her hair. When you have a little girl, it’s like how can you teach her that you’re in control of her body? If I teach her that I’m in charge of whether or not she can touch her hair, she’s going to replace me with some other man when she goes out in the world. She can’t cut my hair but that’s her hair. She has got to have command of her body. So when she goes out into the world, she’s going out with a command that is hers. She is used to making those decisions herself. We try to keep giving them those decisions until they can hold the full weight of their lives.
